How to Install and Maintain a Pergola

Choose a level, well-drained spot

Pick a flat location that doesn't collect water, with enough space around it for furniture and access. Note where the sun falls so the shade lands where you want it.

Build a solid base

A pergola is only as stable as its footing. Set posts in concrete footings or anchor them securely to a solid surface like a paved patio. A firm, level base is the most important step for a safe, long-lasting structure.

Assemble carefully

Follow the instructions, keep the frame square and level as you go, and tighten all fixings properly. For larger pergolas, get a helping hand — it's much easier and safer with two people.

Anchor against wind

Make sure posts and the frame are firmly anchored so the pergola stands up to strong winds. Check anchoring before the monsoon and after heavy storms.

Maintain by material

  • Wood: re-seal, oil or paint periodically to resist moisture, sun and pests; check for rot near the base.
  • Aluminium: just wipe clean — virtually maintenance-free.
  • Steel: check for rust spots, clean, and touch up the coating to stop corrosion.

Clean regularly

Brush off leaves and debris, and wipe down the frame so dirt and damp don't build up. If you've added a canopy, clean it and let it dry fully to prevent mildew.

Tend the plants

If you grow climbers, trim and guide them so they don't overload or trap moisture against the frame. Healthy, managed plants keep both the greenery and the structure in good shape.
